Mölnlycke vant Red Dot Award: Produktdesign 2022
Facial Pressure Injuries (PI) caused by extended use of medical devices have long been a burden for patients and difficult for health care professionals to manage. We are therefore very proud to announce that Red Dot has awarded Mölnlycke for the user centric and innovative product design that’s meeting this challenge heads on.
The need for innovative design
Protecting the face from getting PIs from medical devices is particularly challenging due to the different shapes of devices, the face having an uneven structure and the time constraints always present for nurses. With these parameters Mölnlycke gave a case to Conny Jakobsson, Senior Concept Designer and Daniel Melin, Senior Product Developer, to solve.
Patient focus
Early on Conny and Daniel realised that focusing on the medical devices that can cause PIs would not be the way forward, there are simply too many different variations.
Instead they put all focus on the patients and their faces, to identify the different risk zones. And then, to find the dressings patterns needed to cover these risk zones. They also understood that key to success would be how quick and easy the dressings could be adapted by nurses.
Giving themselves a maximum of three cuts to fit a dressing into any of the identified risk zones, Conny and Daniel thought, drew and cut to find the optimal shapes and cutting lines. And they did.
Smartly shaped, easy to use. And sustainable.
The Mepilex Lite assortment is now complemented with a version that has a cutting guide incorporated directly on the sterile release liner, offering nurses intuitive guidance right at the point of need. By folding the product in half, two sides and multiple sets of template options appear, which both ensure symmetrical shapes when being cut.
On the packaging, reference examples are shown, as well as a QR code that will lead to the local Mepilex Lite product page for more information about the product.
The solution also optimises how much of the dressing that can used, thus minimising waste.
This new Mepilex Lite dressing will be launched in the US from June, with further markets to follow. More information will be available as we move forward.
