Antimicrobial effects of silver-containing wound dressing

Highly exuding and chronic wounds often contain high levels of microorganisms and biofilms, which can significantly delay the healing process  . In response, Mölnlycke Health Care developed an antimicrobial version of the Exufiber^® gelling fibre wound dressing.

The antimicrobial dressing, Exufiber Ag+, contains silver, which has been proven effective against a broad range of microorganisms and biofilms      . Pre-clinical testing of the Exufiber^® Ag+ antimicrobial dressing has employed several testing methods to simulate different aspects of the dressing’s antimicrobial properties The findings show:

• Exufiber Ag+ is effective in reducing biofilm (in vivo)
• Exufiber Ag+ and its antimicrobial properties have been thoroughly tested and reflect that Exufiber Ag+ is effective against a broad range of pathogens, showing sustained antimicrobial action for up to 8 days
